Pedro Cotovio
Crafting Stories from Reclaimed Wood
Born in Lisbon in 1971, Pedro Cotovio has spent a lifetime seeking adventure—as a gyrocopter (thats is why this page is here at SkyXpedition) and hot air balloon pilot, a skipper of motorboats, sailing yachts, and proudly, a traditional Azorean whaleboat (Bote Baleeiro). Yet, his greatest journey began with two new explorers: his four-year-old son and three-year-old daughter.
Pedro’s sculpting story took root during two challenging, transformative years living in the Azores in 2024/26. Tasked by his wife with "organizing the garage" in a historic whaling village, he found something far deeper: a passion for resurrected wood. From abandoned homes, washed-up driftwood on rugged shorelines, and forgotten sawmill scraps, Pedro began shaping organic sculptures that celebrate the beauty of imperfection.
Designed to be seen, touched, and smelled, his sculptures bring a smile to those who experience them. Many pieces showcase a rare, mesmerizing chatoyancy—a striking optical depth where light dances across the natural grain. Today, alongside his children, Pedro continues to bring old timber back to life in endless, timeless journeys.
Sustainable. Soulful. Made to smile.
